How to dress for a family portrait?

How to dress for a family portrait?

People often ask me what they should wear for their portrait session. I always say that the clothes you wear are really a matter of personal taste and preference, and also may depend on the purpose and style of the portrait that you are trying to capture.

For example, if you're doing a holiday portrait for a greeting card, you may want to consider wearing clothes that denote a holiday theme. If you're wanting a formal type of family portrait, then, you may want to consider dressier clothing, such as a dress for women and a jacket for men. If you're looking to capture a warm, casual family theme, then casual clothes like jeans and polo shirts or sweaters will likely do the job. I typically advise my clients not to wear white or black clothing to my photoshoots as those colors may not photograph well. I find that most of the time colors like blue, brown, beige, purple, pink and even red (although be careful not to over do it with red) usually make for a nice photo, especially mid tones. Of course, it's all a matter of personal taste and style. Ask yourself, what mood and style do I want to convey? What do I look good in? Also be cognizant of what others appearing in the portrait will be wearing, you may not want to be the odd man or odd woman out. It's always a good idea to consult with your photographer.
