How to choose a family portrait photographer?

Updated: Sep 21, 2021

How do you know which photographer is going to capture that family photo that best portrays your family and relays the feelings and mood of your special occasion? I always suggest to people to look through photographers' portfolios and see which work best matches the mood, the image and feeling that they're trying to capture. In most cases, each photographer has their own photographic style and way in which they execute their photoshoots. Once you have found four or five photographers whose work you like, ask yourself, do they shoot in a studio or outdoors? Are they pet friendly? How far in advance do you need to book? What's their cancellation policy? Do they offer a money back guarantee? (I offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee for family portraits and engagements - If you're not 100% satisfied, I keep the photos and you keep your money.) What do they charge? Do they charge for travel time? Do they offer advice on what to wear and which venue to choose? What form of payment do they accept and is there a deposit required? And anything else you might deem important. I also recommend that you check reviews on BBB and Yelp. You might even want to go as far as checking references. However, don't be overly critical, even some of the best photographers have complaints. As long the complaints are minor and are not of a serious nature and they addressed and resolved the issue to the customer's satisfaction, they are probably OK. There comes a time when almost every business will face a challenge. In my view, it's how they resolve the issue and take care of the client that matters most. Once you've settled on your top three or four photographers, I highly recommend that you interview them (not their assistant) in person and/or over Zoom and see which one you feel you connect with. I think that it is really important that you connect with the photographer and that you feel comfortable working with them. There are a lot of talented, creative and technical photographers out there that turn out great work, but are not known for their camera-side manners. I personally am all about the customer. My team and I work hard to make sure that we provide a friendly, professional and respectful atmosphere, We will do everything within our power and within reason to make sure that our customers are 100% satisfied. If after an initial call with your photographer you're unsure, try to schedule another call and address any concerns or reservations, If you're still unsure, you may want to consider extending your search. Good luck!
